Get the Facts about Gadolinium Dye Injuries

What is Gadolinium Dye?

Gadolinium Dye is a contrast dye agent used during MRI and MRA procedures.  Originally used to offset the effects of prior contrast dyes which were known to cause kidney failure, Gadolinium Dye has now been shown to lead to NSF or NSD in some patients.

Connection between Gadolinium Dye and NSF (Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis)

In 2006 a link between the use of Gadolinium Dye agents and NSF was made.  There was a higher correlation between patients which had kidney issues or renal failure prior to use of Gadolinium Dyes and MRI scans.  There have been numerous published articles linking the use of Gadolinium Dyes to an increased risk of NSF or NFD.

Because of this link the FDA has started to issue warnings in the use of Gadolinium Dye agents.  The FDA has also linked the occurrence of NSF with four top Gadolinium Contrast Dye agent manufacturers: Omnisan, Multihance, Magnevist, and OptiMark.

What is NSF?

NSF or Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis, is a rare and serious disease. It involves a fibrosis of the skin, eyes, joints and internal organs.  One of the symptoms is an area of hardened skin.  Skin involvement is one of the most mentioned symptoms of NSF, but any organ may be involved including internal organs.

Additional Symptoms include:
  • Thickening and hardening of the skin
  • Skin tightening and swelling
  • Darkened and reddened patches on the skin
  • Burning, Itching and sharp pains
  • Joint problems including stiffening of the joints
  • Muscle weakness
  • Bone pain
Currently there is no successful treatment for NSF.
